Burgeoning reggae artiste Protoje recently released his second full length album entitled The 8 Year Affair (2013), a follow-up to his first album entitled Seven Year Itch (2011). Protoje came onto the scene back in 2011 with his first collection of songs including ones like “Rasta Love,” “Dread” and his home island anthem “JA.” Now he blesses us with another album continuing his journey along the reggae road with his band Indiggnation.
Although Protoje is a new artiste to most of us he’s no stranger to the music industry. Helping him to forge the way through the music business is his mother and manager Lorna V. Bennett who is also a singer/songwriter. Protoje also finds a helping hand from his cousin, hit-making reggae producer Donovan Bennett, better known to dancehall lovers as Don Corleon.
Protoje’s sound is fresh and his lyrics are potent, clever and conscious. His vocal style reminds me of Ini Kamoze and his musical style is rootsy and relevant. Protoje has worked with a few reggae notables including Ky-mani Marley, Romain Virgo and other upcoming artistes such as Tessanne Chin and Chronixx. Some standout chunes on this new project include “Kingston Be Wise” (see video) “This Is NOT A Marijuana Song” and “Who Dem A Program.”
The 8 Year Affair is a nice segue from his first album with its consistency and quality. Look out for Protoje on the web and stay tuned for upcoming appearances.
